Landscape Architecture 210:
Drafting Plan by Hand
ASSIGNMENT- Redesign a courtyards for the Kronshage dorms using design elements and principles so that the space is more functional, visually appealing, and cohesive.
PROJECT- This redesign focuses on using curved shapes and creating private spaces within an open area by utilizing plant material. The site is located right off the Lakeshore Path and is surrounded by natural elements. Using curved components softens the space and connects it to the organic surroundings. Paths are strategically placed to improve functionality and to help guide people through the space efficiently. I added a small deck onto each of the four dorms as well as a “personal” lawn in the front of each. I implemented multiple areas of smaller plant material in large groups to not only differentiate the lawns from paths but to also provide privacy as the plants create “outdoor walls.” Finally, I created a large deck that extends from Lakeshore Path into the water. This addition gives students a space to further connect with nature and gives the Lakeshore community a large and purposeful social gathering spot.
