DS 120: Black and White Composition /
Object Abstraction

ASSIGNMENT- Take an abstraction of an object of your choice and create an interesting composition that conveys a sense of three-dimensional depth and explores the connection between line, value, and shape.
PROCESS- This composition is an abstraction of a large hair bow, which I find interesting because the delicate sheer fabric creates many different shades when overlapped. Working in solely black, white, and grays allowed me to really focus on these shades, and challenged me to figure out which layer corresponds to each shade. To create a focal point I chose to do a gradient background starting with white in the middle and ending with black on the edges. I included dimension by layering bristol board to give both physical texture and complexity to the piece. Each layered piece has shading and gradation to give the allusion of shadow and depth.
